Purpose and Current Status
The original purpose of my innovation project was to address student disengagement and lack of ownership in my seventh-grade Texas History classroom. I noticed that many students could complete assignments, but they were not always making important connections to what they were learning. Students also depended heavily on the teacher for directions, feedback, and confirmation that they were doing something correctly. My goal was to shift some of that responsibility back to the learner.
My innovation combined a station rotation model, student choice, blended learning, and digital ePortfolios. Students worked through different learning experiences using tools such as Edpuzzle, Genially, Thinglink, choice boards, and digital activities, while also creating ePortfolios to collect evidence of their learning and reflect on their progress. I initially implemented the project with my fifth-period Texas History class as a pilot before considering how to expand it.
The expected result was not simply to increase technology use. I wanted students to become more engaged, take greater ownership of their work, choose how they demonstrated learning, and become increased awareness of their own progress. At this point, the project has moved beyond planning and initial implementation. I have implemented major portions of the innovation, collected student work and observations, made adjustments, and reflected on what worked and what did not. However, I am not yet at the point where I can say that every intended outcome has been proven through evidence.
Evidence and Impact
One of the biggest realizations I have had during this review is that implementation is not the same thing as impact. I can clearly document that station rotations were created, students used digital learning tools, students were given choices, and ePortfolios were implemented. Those things prove that the innovation occurred. They do not automatically prove that student learning, engagement, or ownership increased as a result.
There are encouraging signs of progress. I observed students becoming more comfortable working independently and moving between different types of learning activities. Students could choose how they completed certain assignments and how they represented their learning. The ePortfolios also gave students a space to organize their work, reflect on it, and share what they had accomplished with an audience beyond the teacher. In some cases, knowing that parents or others could view their work appeared to make students take the quality of the work more seriously.
The Leveraging Technology for Student Success framework helped me look at this more critically. The framework stresses technology selection, infrastructure, and implementation while considering equity and evaluation throughout the process (Institute of Education Sciences [IES], 2023). This matters because my project's success cannot be measured by how many digital tools I introduced. The technology has to serve the learning goal.
Equity also became an important consideration. Some students needed more support with navigation, reading directions, organization, or completing independent tasks. Students receiving accommodations did not necessarily experience every activity in the same way as other students. For example, activities that were exciting and challenging for some learners could become overwhelming for others. I responded by chunking instructions, providing examples and visuals, using timers, offering different ways to demonstrate learning, and adjusting activities when needed.
At this stage, I would describe much of my evidence as implementation, with emerging evidence of impact. I have student products, reflections, observations, participation patterns, and examples of students exercising greater choice. What I still need is stronger comparative evidence. I would like to examine whether engagement, assignment completion, assessment performance, or the quality of student reflections changed over time. Without that evidence, I can reasonably say the innovation created new opportunities for ownership and engagement, but I cannot claim it alone caused measurable academic improvement.
Implementation, Context, and Leadership
Using the Education Endowment Foundation's implementation framework helped me better understand how the project developed. The EEF describes implementation through the flexible phases of Explore, Prepare, Deliver, and Sustain (Education Endowment Foundation [EEF], 2024). I believe my project has moved through Explore and Prepare and has spent significant time in Deliver. I have also begun thinking about Sustain because I am now considering which pieces should remain part of my teaching practice rather than treating the innovation as a temporary project.
The EEF behaviors of Engage, Unite, and Reflect were also present throughout the project. Engage occurred when students were given more voice and choice and when colleagues and administrators were included in conversations about the project. Unite occurred as I communicated the purpose of the innovation and connected the technology and activities back to the larger goal of student ownership. Reflect has probably been the strongest behavior throughout my experience. Very little worked exactly as I imagined it would on paper. I constantly adjusted pacing, directions, technology, student grouping, activities, and expectations based on what was happening in the classroom.
Context mattered more than I originally realized. Time, technology availability, student learning needs, accommodations, classroom management, pacing requirements, and student comfort with independence all influenced implementation. Relationships also mattered. Administrative support gave me the opportunity to try something different, while conversations with colleagues, students, and families influenced how I modified the project.
This connects strongly to Drew Dudley's idea of Everyday Leadership. Dudley (2010) challenges the idea that leadership must always be something large, formal, or connected to a title. Looking back, leadership in my innovation often showed up in much smaller moments. It happened when I encouraged a student to take ownership of work instead of immediately giving the answer. It happened when I listened to students who were struggling with an activity and changed my approach. It happened when another educator offered feedback that caused me to rethink something I had planned.
I also influenced students by giving them greater responsibility for their learning. At the same time, they influenced me. Their reactions, questions, successes, and frustrations changed the direction of the innovation. Those interactions showed me that implementing change is not something I do to learners. It develops with them.
What Needs Attention Next?
The most important area that needs attention is evidence of impact. I have considerable evidence of what I implemented, but I need to examine more closely what changed because of it. My next step is to organize the evidence I already have and identify where I can compare engagement, participation, completion, assessment performance, student reflections, or portfolio quality over time.
I also need to examine which parts of the innovation produced the most value. I may not need to continue every digital tool or every type of station. The stronger version of this project may actually involve fewer tools with a clearer purpose. I want to determine which elements genuinely increased student agency and which elements simply increased activity.
Before completing my full Innovation Project Update & Analysis, I need to look more deeply at the connection between implementation fidelity, student experience, equity, and outcomes. The biggest lesson from this checkpoint is that successful innovation is not evaluated by how much was created or how much technology was used. It is measured by whether the learning environment changed in a meaningful and sustainable way for students. My project has given me evidence that this change is possible, but the next stage of my analysis needs to determine where that change is strongest, where the evidence is limited, and what I would do differently moving forward.
