Aligning Outcomes, Assessment and Activities

When developing my Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG), I ensured it directly aligned with the core vision of my innovation plan. As I mapped out the assessments and activities, my focus remained on Creating Significant Learning Environments (CSLE) and staying true to my foundational learning philosophy.

A major priority of this design is to support the educators who will introduce ePortfolios into their classrooms. I firmly believe that for students to succeed, teachers need to experience the creation process firsthand. By prioritizing teacher preparation, this plan ensures educators feel confident, equipped, and ready to guide their students in building ePortfolios for the first time.

Using Fink's Significant Learning Outcomes, I designed an experience in which teachers actively construct their own ePortfolios, reflect on their learning, and apply these insights directly to their instruction. This method not only models best practices but also empowers teachers to better foster student ownership, meaningful reflection, and authentic learning in their own classrooms.

Significant Learning Goals

Foundational Knowledge

Students will build a strong foundation in Texas History by understanding key events, people, and concepts, as well as important vocabulary, timelines, and cause-and-effect relationships. They will also begin to see how historical events are interconnected instead of isolated moments in time. In addition, students will learn the purpose and structure of digital portfolios and understand the importance of reflection as part of the learning process.

Beyond memorization, students will develop a greater understanding of why historical events matter and how they connect to larger ideas, themes, and perspectives.

Application

Students will move beyond basic understanding by applying their knowledge in purposeful ways. They will strengthen critical thinking skills as they examine historical events and perspectives, while additionally engaging in creative thinking through the design and development of their digital portfolios.

Students will use practical thinking to solve problems, make decisions, and connect their learning to real-life contexts. Through ongoing portfolio development, they will create and revise artifacts that demonstrate their understanding while also managing long-term projects. This process ensures that students are more than just learners; they actively apply what they learn through authentic tasks.

Integration

A major focus of this course is helping students connect their learning. Students will make connections between historical events and themes within Texas History, as well as across other subject areas such as reading and writing. They will also relate historical concepts to their own lives and to modern-day society, recognizing how past events continue to influence current issues.

This level of integration helps students move beyond simply collecting information and instead begin connecting the dots, which is essential for meaningful and lasting learning.

Human Dimension

Students will grow not only academically but also personally. They will develop a stronger understanding of themselves as learners through recognizing their strengths and areas for growth. Through this process, they will build confidence in their ability to learn, improve, and succeed.

Additionally, students will develop collaboration skills and learn to work effectively with others. They will also gain a stronger understanding of different perspectives, both from historical viewpoints and within their classroom setting.

Caring

Through this learning experience, students will begin to develop a greater sense of ownership and self-respect in their work. They will recognize the value of history and its relevance to their lives, thereby increasing their curiosity and interest in learning.

As students take more responsibility for their work and progress, they will begin to care more deeply about both the content and their own learning journey.

Learning How to Learn

One of the most important goals of this course is to help students learn how to learn. Students will develop the ability to reflect on their growth, set meaningful goals, and monitor their progress over time. They will learn how to fine-tune their learning strategies and become more self-directed and independent.

Through digital portfolios, students will also gain experience using technology as a tool to support learning, organization, and reflection.

By the end of the course, students will not only have gained knowledge of Texas History but will also have developed the skills and attitude needed to continue learning beyond the classroom.
